METAIRIE, La. -- Saints quarterback Drew Brees doesnt dispute the notion that hes been in a considerable rut the past two games. At the same time, the perspective hes gained during a career spanning nearly 16 seasons leaves him with little doubt that a vintage performance could come as early as this Sunday in Arizona.Ive played football a long time, Brees said after practice on Wednesday.Ive thrown a lot of interceptions, unfortunately. Ive also come back and had some pretty huge wins after games like that. The bottom line is my confidence is not lacking, put it that way. While Im disappointed in myself for what happened over the last two games ... I know I can make those corrections. While Brees leads the NFL with 4,170 yards passing and is tied for second with 30 touchdowns, he has not thrown a scoring pass in two games. During that span, he has been intercepted six times.Yet, after studying video of Brees season, Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson said he doesnt really see a quarterback who is struggling.Rather, Brees has been plagued by untimely mistakes, sometimes his own and sometimes his pass blockers or receivers.A couple of those interceptions were some (deflected) passes, obviously a couple ill-advised throws, Peterson said. The front has forced him to make bad throws. We already know Drew Brees is a short quarterback so defensive linemen force him to step up so he cant see.He understands how to get out of funks, Peterson continued.By him being in the league so long, Im quite sure he understands to stick to the process, stick to the script and eventually itll turn for him. I hope it doesnt turn for him against us on Sunday, but I wish him the best of luck.Brees very well could have had two touchdown passes last weekend in Tampa Bay. Running back Travaris Cadet and receiver Brandin Cooks both were unable to catch passes that hit them square in the hands in or near the end zone, and the Saints wound up ending both drives with field goals.A different result on those plays might have lifted New Orleans to a victory in what wound up instead as a 16-11 loss.It also didnt help New Orleans offense that starting center Max Unger, and one of their top receivers, rookie Michael Thomas, both were inactive because of injuries.Saints receiver Willie Snead said problems for the offense the past two games really began with a drop-off in the running game, which puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback to make tough throws and put the ball in certain places where its going to be tight. When we start becoming one-dimensional, defenses start to key in on that. They lock in and before you know it theres tipped passes, forced throws and stuff like that, Snead said.A lot of it is missed opportunities, penalties pushing us back. Theres nothing wrong with Drew. Drew is always on. Its all about opportunities and timing. We missed a lot of opportunities last game -- and we wont miss those opportunities again.Brees said it doesnt bother him when people view statistics such as zero TD passes and six interceptions in the past two games in isolation, even though he knows its more complicated than that.I could care less what people say, Brees said. I am disappointed in the fact that it happened. The good thing is I know how to fix it. ... I do my job. I turn it loose. I play confident and I know what cant happen in certain situations.Game notes The Saints have placed left tackle Terron Armstead on injured reserve, ending his season. Armstead has played in just seven games because of knee and quadriceps injuries. ... New Orleans also signed veteran linebacker Jason Trusnik. ... Four players sat out Wednesdays practice, the Saints said. They were: RB Mark Ingram (toe), CB Delvin Breaux (shoulder), LB Stephone Anthony (knee) and RB Daniel Lasco (hamstring). ... Unger (foot) and Thomas (foot) and LB Craig Robertson (shoulder) all returned to practice on a limited basis.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Pedro Martinez Jersey . -- Chicago Bears cornerback Tim Jennings was selected Monday to his second straight Pro Bowl, while guard Kyle Long made it after a solid rookie season. Tom Seaver Jersey . LOUIS -- The New Orleans Saints looked like a team playing out the string. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Skyler Howard was waiting for something good to happen to West Virginias offense. That occurred in the fourth quarter, when the Mountaineers came from 13 points down to beat Kansas State 17-16 on Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams. You know the snowball effect where you get one thing going wrong and the snowball just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger? Howard said. Youre looking around like, man, we need a spark. We need something to happen. Our guys came together and kept fighting. Nobody was down or pointing fingers.Despite being held scoreless in the first half for the first time in three seasons, West Virginia improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2012. The Mountaineers broke a four-game losing streak to the Wildcats since joining the league that year.I just couldnt be more proud of our team for having the courage to go out there and do that in the second half, said West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen.Kansas State (2-2) had a chance to win it. But Matthew McCrane, who earlier made three field goals, missed a 43-yarder wide left with 2:03 left. West Virginia got the ball at its 26 and ran out the clock.Kansas State was limited to 108 yards of offense in the second half. Our execution was not as good as it needs to be, said Kansas State coach Bill Snyder. We just probably didnt move the ball like we should. We struggled offensively in the second half when we had to have some movement. Couldnt get first downs.West Virginias turnaround began when Shelton Gibson caught a 52-yard pass near the end of the third quarter and KaRaun White caught a 7-yarder on fourth-and-6 four plays later. Justin Crawford ran nine yards on first-and-goal and he finished the drive with a 1-yard TD run with 13:41 left to cut the deficit to 16-10.A 31-yard punt later gave West Virginia the ball back at its 43, annd Howard converted a third-down pass to KaRaun White at the Kansas State 9 before scrambling to find Jovon Durante in the right corner of the end zone from 7 yards out with 6:11 left for the final margin.dddddddddddd.I saw a little window and we took it, said Howard, who finished 24 of 41 passes for 298 yards with one interception. In the grand scheme of things, we make that play a lot in practice. But to finally do it in a game, it paid off.West Virginia squeaked by for the second straight game. A week ago the Mountaineers were ahead of BYU by 16 points in the fourth quarter and needed Maurice Flemings interception to seal the 35-32 win .Finding a way to win is the most important thing, Holgorsen said.THE TAKEAWAYKANSAS STATE: The Wildcats entered the game with the nations top defense but gave up 422 yards to the Mountaineers. Kansas State was held to 286 total yards of offense and Jesse Ertz completed 10 of 30 passes for 166 yards.Snyder said Ertz was not like he has been in the last couple of weeks. But once again, West Virginia had an awful lot to do with that.WEST VIRGINIA: The Mountaineers left plenty of points off the board. Rushel Shell fumbled the ball away at the Kansas State 3 late in the third quarter, and Josh Lambert earlier missed a 30-yard field goal.POLL IMPLICATIONSWest Virginia could get enough votes to sneak into the AP Top 25 poll but needed a more convincing win to ensure that happens. The Mountaineers entered Saturdays game four spots out of the poll.UP NEXTKANSAS STATE: Hosts Texas Tech next Saturday.WEST VIRGINIA: Heads into a bye week before playing its first true road game of the season at Texas Tech on Oct. 15.---AP College Football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
