RIO DE JANEIRO -- An Egyptian athlete who refused to shake his Israeli opponents hand after their judo bout has been reprimanded and sent home from the Rio Olympics, officials said Monday. The International Olympic Committee said Islam El Shehaby received a severe reprimand for his behavior following his first-round heavyweight bout loss to Or Sasson on Friday. When Sasson extended his hand, El Shehaby backed away and shook his head, injecting Middle Eastern politics into the Rio Olympics. The referee called the 34-year-old El Shehaby back to the mat and obliged to him to bow; he gave a quick nod and was loudly booed as he exited.Judo opponents typically bow or shake hands at the beginning and end of a match as a sign of respect.El Shehaby, an ultraconservative Salafi Muslim, had come under pressure from Islamist-leaning and nationalist voices in Egypt before the Rio Games to withdraw, but competed anyway. The IOC, which set up a disciplinary commission to investigate the incident, said the Egyptians conduct was contrary to the rules of fair play and against the spirit of friendship embodied in the Olympic values. The Egyptian Olympic Committee also strongly condemned El Shehabys actions and has sent him home, the IOC said. The IOC also asked the Egyptian committee to make sure that all its athletes receive proper education on the Olympic values before coming to the Olympic Games.Immediately after the bout, the Egyptian Olympic committee had called it a personal action by El Shehaby, adding that he had been alerted before the match to abide by all the rules and to have sporting spirt during his match with the Israeli player.Sasson, who lost in the semifinals but later won a bronze medal, had said he was not surprised by El Shehabys actions because his coaches had warned him he might be refused a handshake. This was his decision, he said.Similar incidents have happened before at judo competitions between Israelis and Arabs.Egypt was the first country in the Arab world to sign a peace treaty and normalize relations with Israel after decades of war. The NFL will send teams an explanatory video to clarify this seasons spate of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, senior vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said Tuesday.Blandino, however, reiterated that the emphasis on such calls has come at the direction of the leagues competition committee and wont be relaxed as the season continues.Taunting calls this season have risen 220 percent compared to the first four weeks of last season, while other unsportsmanlike penalties -- primarily for celebrations -- are up 56 percent, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. Many players have said they werent aware that their penalized acts were illegal, and Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin -- a member of the competition committee -- said Tuesday he thought the league should provide clarification.Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown has been penalized twice this season for twerking during post-touchdown celebrations. The video about clarification should be circulated within the next week, Blandino said during an appearance on NFL Network. We certainly want thhe teams to have clarification, Blandino said, and this isnt a new issue.ddddddddddddWeve been dealing with this in the past. And so were going to send a tape out in the next week or so and clarify some of these things. But the key is if its a gesture that either mimics a violent act -- thats something with a firearm or a bow and arrow -- or a sexually suggestive act, those are unsportsmanlike conduct. Thats ... something that officials will flag. Thats direct from the competition committee and something that were going to try to be as consistent as possible.Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman was penalized last Sunday for mimicking the act of shooting a bow and arrow during a celebration after receiving a warning for a similar act two weeks earlier. Referee Jeff Triplettes announcement of the penalty has been mocked on social media. We certainly dont want our officials getting too specific with the announcement, Blandino said. ' ' '
