Id like to think were collectively smarter about anointing golfs biggest stars than we were at the beginning of this year. Id like to think we learned something about the game at its highest level -- and more importantly, something about ourselves -- but maybe thats just wishful thinking. It wasnt so long ago that the idea of a Big Three was prevalent among those who observe the game on professional and recreational platforms. And yet, it was long ago enough that I actually had to look up exactly who those three players were. The answer: Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson. Thats right -- way back in early 2016, we somehow categorized the worlds best players and didnt include a guy named Rory McIlroy. This is the same Rory McIlroy who wound up winning the FedEx Cup and was far and away Europes most imposing team member at the Ryder Cup.So yeah, sometimes we dont know nearly as much as we think we know. That is, unless you never bought the Big Three hype and considered it a Big Four. But that, too, still eliminated deserving contenders. Some insisted wed need to throw in Henrik Stenson for a Big Five, plus?Adam Scott for a Big Six or even plus?Patrick Reed for a Big Seven. If this all sounds silly, thats because it is. All of it. As much as wed like to compartmentalize this generation with an updated version of Jack, Arnie and Gary, thats not a viable option anymore.I was reminded of this idea once again while watching Hideki Matsuyama win the WGC-HSBC Champions this weekend.Youd be hard-pressed to find many people who had Matsuyama in their Big Eight or Big Nine or Big Ten or whatever it was earlier this year, but the man is good. Like, really good.In lieu of adding another really to that adjective, I submit these numbers: In his past four worldwide starts, hes been top five in all of them. Six of his past nine, too. Extend that over the past 12 months, and his top-10 results have more than doubled his missed cuts. One week after moving into the worlds top 10 for the first time after a runner-up finish at the CIMB Classic, Matsuyamas 7-shot victory vaulted him to sixth in the world -- behind only Day, McIlroy, Johnson, Stenson and Spieth.Maybe he needs to contend in a few more major championships to move into that next tier on golfs hierarchal stratosphere, but we shouldnt neglect the fact that his two MCs in majors this year were sandwiched by a T-7 at the Masters and a T-4 at the PGA Championship. If there exists a main criticism of Matsuyamas game, its his putting, which often ranges from passable to pitiful. For the PGA Tour season that just passed, he ranked 103rd on the greens, posting a negative score in the strokes gained putting statistic. Not one of those numbers, though, is as important as this one: 24. Thats his age, several years younger than young guns Day and McIlroy (who are barely clutching to that moniker these days) and less than 18 months older than Spieth. All of which suggests Matsuyama should be in the conversation about the best players right now, part of some Big Six, if you will.Except that would repeat this silly process all over again.Any golf aficionado knows enough to not overly credit anything that happens in the years final three months, just as we should now know enough not to limit the highest echelon of players to a specific total number. This is the part of the story where I should warn that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Lets not rush to judgment here. Lets not automatically launch Matsuyama into some imaginary upper tier, but lets not exactly leave him out of the conversation, either.Theres a delicate balance here, but maybe we collectively learned something over the past year. This business of casually ranking the games elite is fickle, at best. At worst, it makes us appear foolish when circumstances change. This much we should know by now. Nike Blazer Shoes For Sale . -- Ty Montgomery had 290 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, and fifth-ranked Stanford held on to beat No. Wholesale Blazers . Ivanovic was leading 7-5, 1-0 when Hantuchova withdrew after falling 0-40 behind in the second game. The match started slowly for Ivanovic, who surrendered her first two serves as Hantuchova took a 5-3 lead. http://www.cheapnikeblazer.com/ . -- Teemu Selanne scored the first goal of his 22nd NHL season, and the Anaheim Ducks extended the best start in franchise history with their fifth straight victory, 3-2 over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night. The Raptors traded Rudy Gay, Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray to the Sacramento Kings on Monday, in exchange for Greivis Vasquez, John Salmons, Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes. ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers still have the best record in the American League and are the only defending division champion in the majors going into the All-Star break on top this season. But the Rangers definitely need this extended midsummer break.Max Keplers grand slam was one of four homers by the Minnesota Twins as the team with the ALs worst record beat Texas 15-5 on Sunday. It was the Rangers ninth loss in 12 games. There are points in the season where they dont look so well, dont feel so well. Today capped all that off. Hopefully, thats the bottom, manager Jeff Banister said. Theres some times when youre not playing well, you kind of hope for a rainout. We get a four-day rainout. The Rangers (54-36) have a 5 1/2-game lead over Houston in the AL West, their largest ever at the break -- but they led the division by 10 games less than two weeks ago. These four days come at a perfect time for us, shortstop Elvis Andrus said.Keplers slam came with two outs in the fifth off A.J. Griffin (3-1), putting the Twins up 6-0.Griffin gave up nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk in his five innings. That came a day after 37-year-old Kyle Lohse went five innings in his Rangers debut, ending an unwanted club-record streak of seven consecutive games when their starting pitchers didnt even make it at least five innings.Minnesota (32-56) won three of four at Texas after taking the last two games of its home series against the Rangers the previous weekend.Kennys Vargas hit a towering shot to center in the fourth for the games first run. Eduardo Escobar and Brian Dozier added back-to-back homers in a seven-run seventh for the Twins, who have won seven of their last nine games -- their best stretch of the season. We always talk about trusting the process, but when you get good results and win games, you understand how enjoyable it is to go out there and compete and come out and win games, Twins manager Paul Molitor said. Id like to think that these guys are hungry to win as many games going forward.Minnesota has 299 homers the last 15 games, and the Twins 140 runs since June 18 are the most in the majors.ddddddddddddTommy Milone (2-2) struck out three and walked three. The left-hander was out of the game after walking Adrian Beltre to start the sixth, and Ryan Rua promptly grounded into a double play against reliever Taylor Rogers.Banister told his players to clear their heads, clear their minds and let their bodies heal up for a few days. He also had a message about what he expects when they are together again after the break.Get back to what we do best, 27 hard outs, both sides of the baseball, the manager said. Focus on defense, run the bases hard, knock some people off the plate if we need to, take the plate back as a pitching staff. Put together a professional at-bat.OFF THE BASE -- BARELYEddie Rosario, coming off a four-hit game for the Twins on Saturday night, clearly slid into second base ahead of the tag in his first at-bat in the second inning Sunday. Banister asked for a replay review, which showed Rosarios foot just briefly lost contact with the bag while 2B Rougned Odor was still applying a tag. The safe call was overturned for the second out, and Suzuki then had what was an inning-ending flyball instead of a likely sac fly to leave Robbie Grossman stranded at third base.SHORT HOPSThe Twins matched their season high with 18 hits, first set in the series opener Thursday. ... Texas allowed at least 10 runs for the fifth time its last nine games. ... Vargas had his third homer in six games since being called up July 4. ... Odor had two errors in the eighth.TRAINERS ROOMRangers: RHP Keone Kela (right elbow) was scheduled to pitch in relief at Double-A Frisco for the second consecutive game Sunday night. If all goes well, he could rejoin the Rangers after the All-Star break.UP NEXTRangers: The Rangers open a 10-day, nine-game trip Friday with an interleague series at the Chicago Cubs. ' ' '
